The Holy Name of Jesus House of Studies is the home of seminarians sponsored by dioceses and religious orders who are pursuing a college degree, ESL studies, or a Clinical Pastoral Education.
College-level seminarians pursuing their Bachelor of Arts attend Assumption College (3.4 miles), Holy Cross College (1.7) or Anna Maria College (10 miles). Seminarians seeking English language and culture studies attend Clark University’s American Language and Culture Institute (ALCI), which is a five-minute walk through University Park or Worcester State. Seminarians seeking a Clinical Pastoral Education enroll in this program at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester (2 miles).
To date, residents have come from the Archdioceses of New York and Boston, as well as from the Dioceses of Norwich, Providence, Rochester and Worcester.
The Holy Name of Jesus House of Studies was dedicated by Bishop Robert J. McManus in 2007. This three story, forty-six room facility was originally commissioned as a rectory by Bishop Thomas M. O’Leary in 1926, and designed by the renowned architect of scores of churches, schools, convents and rectories in New England and Québec –– Onésime E. Nault.
At the heart of this brick, granite and slate structure is its chapel where Mass, prayers, and devotions are offered daily for the spiritual nourishment of its seminarians.
Sixteen bedrooms are located on the second and third floors of the House of Studies, as well as eight bathrooms and a computer room. A chapel, sacristy, spiritual direction room, library, conference room, dining room, and kitchen are located on the first floor. A gymnasium, game room, music room, TV room, workshop, laundry room and storage room are located on the basement level.
Bicycles are maintained for use in warm weather. A city bus stop is only a five-minute walk away, and trains & buses can be boarded within ten minutes at Worcester’s Union Station. Logan (Boston) and T. F. Green (Providence) airports are one hour away via van-shuttle.
The current co-directors of the House of Studies are Father Donato Infante, vocation director, and Father Hugo Cano, director of Hispanic ministry.
